SAFETY WARNING!
All candles have an inherent danger associated with their use in the form of an open flame. Improper use of JOI or any other candle accessory can result in fire, injury or potentially death. Please recognize the risk of fire and take the following precautions when using JOI:
1.2.3.4.
5.6.7.8.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Keep away from combustibles
- Place candle and wick in an upright position
- Trim wick to 1/4” (6 mm) before lighting
- Keep the wax pool clear of matches and other debris to avoid flaring
- Do not move a burning candle
- Never use liquid to extinguish
Operate with 5/8” (16 mm) high, 4 hour tea lights only. (Use of other candles or fuels can result in fire or injury.) Operate on level surface.
WARNING: Never use lamp oil, fondue oil or any fuel in the JOI lamp other than a 4-hour, 5/8″ (16 mm) high tea light candle to avoid flares, fire or injury.
- Operation instructions:
JOI is easy to use, right out of the box. To get started, just follow these simple steps:
- Place JOI on level surface.
- Ensure the heat collector shield is in place before lighting. (See Section 5, Fig. H)
- Only use a fresh, unburned 4 hour tea light candle, 5/8” (16 mm) high. Do not re-light a used tea light.
- Ensure wick is in middle of candle wax.
- Position wick upright.
- Trim candle wick to 1/4” (6 mm).
- Place candle in candle cup.
- Light candle.
- Wait 45 seconds before shutting door.
- Close and latch door.
- Keep door closed and latched.
- LED’s may take up to 5 minutes to start.

- Visit www.caframobrands.com for more information.
- Recommended Candles
You will get the greatest satisfaction and operation from JOI if you only use good quality 4 hour, 5/8” (16 mm) tea light candles. Low quality candles often have poor wicks that are not in the center of the candle. Low quality candles can result in poor performance of JOI and increase soot build up. TIP: Clear cup, scented or colored tea lights will not fit and may result in poor performance of JOI.
- Recommended Use
JOI is designed for use outdoors. Although safe to use indoors, the reduced airflow compared to outdoors can result in decreased performance of the product. TIP: If using JOI in temperatures below 0°C (32°F), use care in maneuvering the extendable lamp head as all plastics get more brittle when very cold.
- Two Modes of Light for Outdoor Entertaining
JOI provides an elegant solution for all of your outdoor lighting needs. Simply raise or lower JOI lamp head roof to provide the amount of light needed for entertaining guests.
Ambience
For a more intimate or romantic setting, operate JOI in the closed position with the lamp head roof down.
Area Lighting
To bathe your entire table in warm light, simply grasp the lamp head roof and extend the telescoping arms as shown in the diagram:
- JOI Care and Maintenance
JOI has been designed to provide many seasons of enjoyment when you follow the operating instructions included. The stainless steel surfaces should be cleaned regularly to keep JOI looking beautiful. Fingerprints and dirt can be removed with regular glass cleaner and a warm water rinse.
Cleaning Soot Build-Up
Under normal operation JOI will burn off any soot that forms on the heat collector. However, soot can build up if a candle wick is too long or not situated in the center of the heat collector. If soot is allowed to build up you will see a reduction in the amount of light generated by JOI. This can be easily corrected by cleaning the soot from the heat collector by following these easy steps:
- Allow JOI to cool completely.
- Place JOI on top of newspaper and wear gloves (soot is very messy).
- Open door.
- Insert paper towel below heat collector to catch any falling soot.
- Remove heat collector shield by pulling straight out (see below).
- Remove soot by running a folded piece of paper or clean paintbrush through the grooves of the heat collector as shown.
- Carefully remove the sooted paper towel.
- Replace heat collector shield and close door.
- Candle Flares and JOI Safety Feature
Candle flares occur when the entire liquid candle wax pool ignites. This is normally caused when a match or other debris has fallen into the wax pool. If you notice a flare occurring in JOI – DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. JOI has been designed to cut off the oxygen and minimize the flame in the case of such a flare. Ensure any combustibles are moved away from JOI and allow the flame to burn out.
- Extinguishing the Candle
To extinguish the candle at any time it is recommended that you open the door and place a candle snuffer over the flame. If a candle snuffer is not readily available blow out the candle by placing your index finger horizontally in front of the flame and blowing on it gently. This forces the air to surround the flame and minimize the splattering of hot wax. Allow the candle to sit until the molten wax cools and solidifies before disposing of the used tea light. Do not re-use the tea light.
- JOI Troubleshooting Guide
Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
Candle won’t stay lit when door is closed. |
JOI requires a draft airflow to be created in order to work properly.

Condensation forming on the inside of the glass. | Water condenses on the cold glass until it warms up. | Allow candle to continue burning and condensation will disappear. |
Lights aren’t as bright as normal. | Soot build-up on heat collector.
Using a smaller 2 hour tea light.
Extreme humidity or poor quality candle reducing flame size. |
Clean heat collector as shown in section 5.
Use only 5/8” (16 mm), 4-hour tea light candles
Replace with fresh candle. |
Soot or smoke can be seen rising out of the top of JOI. | Candle wick is too long.
